Cayuga, Ind. - Billy Joe Martin, 68, of Cayuga, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Franciscan Health Lafayette in Lafayette, Indiana.

He was born May 22, 1952 in Danville, Illinois the son of the late John W. and Delores (Blue) Martin.

Billy Joe married Mary Jo Hawn on August 31, 1974 in Eugene, Indiana. She survives.

Other survivors include 2 daughters, Kelly Jo (Rusty) Rice of Petersburg, Indiana and Shelly "Pete" (Bob) Schefke of Arlington, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Braxton Rice, Brody Rice, Nolan Rice, Ray Rice, Cassie Schefke and Kiersten Schefke; sisters, Pamela Brumfield and Angela Stonebraker, both of Danville, Illinois; brother, John (Lora) Martin of State Line, Indiana; sister in laws, Jackie (Larry) Moore and Donna Laws, both of Cayuga, Indiana; brother in law, Bill Hawn of Eugene, Indiana and many special nieces and nephews.

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John and Delores Martin; sister, Wauneeta Martin; sister in law, Kandia Hawn; brother in laws, Robert Brumfield, Wiley Laws and Sam Hawn.

Billy Joe graduated from Danville High School in 1970. He was a member of the Unites States Army Reserves for 6 years and retired as a supervisor from Inland Container. Billy Joe was a member of the Anchor Lodge No. 980 in Danville, Illinois and American Legion Post 263 in Cayuga, Indiana. He enjoyed restoring classic street rods, coaching his grandson's baseball team, camping and spending time with his family.

Funeral service: 2 p.m. EST Monday, March 29, 2021 at DeVerter Funeral Home; Officiating: Rev. Jon Overbey; Burial with Honors: Eugene Cemetery, Eugene, Indiana; Visitation: 4 p.m. EST until 7 p.m. EST Sunday, March 28, 2021 at DeVerter Funeral Home. The wearing of masks will be required for entry. The family requests that donations be made to an organization of one's choice.
